What is Vibe Coding? A Guide for Hong Kong Founders
A simple explanation of how AI-assisted software building works for founders in Hong Kong.
"Vibe coding" is a term coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in early 2025. The basic idea is simple: instead of writing code yourself, you describe what you want in plain language, and AI helps generate the code. You still review, test, and refine it, but you are no longer starting from a blank screen.
It sounds simple. It's also genuinely transformative — particularly for entrepreneurs and business people who have good ideas but no technical background.
Why It Matters in Hong Kong
Hong Kong has a high density of entrepreneurs, finance professionals, retail and F&B business owners, and ambitious people with digital product ideas. What it has far fewer of: affordable, available technical talent willing to build early-stage products at reasonable cost.
Vibe coding changes the equation. You no longer need a developer to build a prototype, an MVP, or even a production-ready product. You need someone who understands what good software looks like and can direct AI tools effectively.
That's the gap Flux AI Labs fills. We're the technical partner for people who know what they want to build but don't know how to build it themselves.
How It Actually Works
A vibe coding session looks something like this:
- You describe: "I want a screen where users can swipe through restaurant cards. Swipe right to save, left to skip."
- AI generates: Working SwiftUI code for a swipe card interface, with gesture handling and animations.
- You review: Does it look right? Does it work the way you imagined?
- You iterate: "The cards feel stiff — make the animation more springy. Add a LIKE badge when swiping right."
- Repeat until it's right.
This is orders of magnitude faster than traditional development. A feature that would take a developer days to write from scratch can take hours — or less — to describe and refine.
What Vibe Coding Is Good At
- UI and layout — screens, cards, navigation, animations
- Standard features — auth, payments, notifications, maps
- Data management — connecting to databases, APIs, storage
- Prototyping — getting something testable in front of users fast
What Still Requires Expertise
- Architecture decisions: Choosing the right database, the right framework, the right approach matters and affects everything downstream
- Debugging subtle issues: AI can introduce bugs that look correct on the surface but fail in edge cases
- Security: Authentication, data protection, and payment security need human review
- Product judgment: AI will build whatever you describe. Knowing what to describe is the hard part.
Vibe Coding for Non-Technical Founders in HK
If you're a non-technical founder in Hong Kong with a product idea, vibe coding means your options in 2026 are genuinely different from what they were in 2023.
You don't need to:
- Find a CTO or technical co-founder before you can start
- Budget HK$200,000 for an MVP
- Wait 6 months to see if your idea works
You do still need:
- A clear enough idea to describe in plain language
- Someone who knows how to direct AI tools effectively (that's us)
- Willingness to iterate based on what you actually see built
